I'm not a runner...and other things

My name is Rachel, and I'm not a runner. This is a sad, hard fact to admit. I enjoy working out, sweating, pushing myself, setting goals and breaking them, and I SO want to be a runner! However, my knees don't like it, and truth be told, there's something in the depths of who I am that actually hates running! Whew. It feels good to say that. I see so many of my friends running - and they're GREAT at it! Emily and Annie, I'm looking at you! And so I've tried to do it. I tried to be a hardcore runner before pregnancy, and I've tried it for a bit afterwards. But you know what? I truly enjoy walking! I love walking fast and I'm trying to get my speed back to where it was pre-pregnancy. Right after Reed, I was back to walking a snail's 20 minute mile pace. Today, I was at a 16'23" pace. Before Reed I was a 12'30" pace so I've got 4 more minutes to shave off. And so, I will choose to be content with not being a runner and instead cheer on my running friends! Sure you may lap me, but it's ok. I'm finally ok with it. Keep it up ladies and knock em dead!

On a different note, Reed is amazing! I can't get over how much I love this kiddo! My life has changed, but it's wonderful. I go back to work Monday and it's going to be hard. However, his daycare is great, his teachers are precious, and he will finally have a regular nap schedule :)

A few other things are on the horizon and we shall see what comes of it. But for now I will leave you with this fun bit of info...if you're looking for fabulous writing pens in fun colors, look no further than Papermate Inkjoy pens! They write as smooth as gel pens but last as long as ballpoint pens. So fun for doodling or maybe even grading papers...Becca?

***UPDATE***

I realized I left out Candace in the list of runners...my bad! You're a beast as well!

Wow! Your fastest walk pace is the pace that I've been running, I just started running a little bit faster than that. That's amazing! Walking burns just as many calories as running so go you!

This post was so refreshing! My name is Rebecca and I, also, am not a runner. So thankful that someone else shares this frustration with me! It also inspires me to try to get back to the gym. (I haven't been going since school started.)

And I'm all about some fancy pens, so I'll definitely check those Papermates! Thanks :)

lol... wish you knew how much it cracks me up that people consider me a "runner" now. hehe. I guess I can say that I am (was).. only ran 3 miles this week :(...

However, you are a FAST walker! I dont think being a runner or running is all that it's cracked up to be-- yes it is a challenge, but there are lots of other things that are great workouts. And honestly, I even think runners get tired of running sometimes. (well I do anyways. lol)

Rachel, I also wanted to point out that I was thinking your same exact thoughts in the middle of my 1/2 marathon training-- I was so convinced I wasn't a runner. So, I think that people are definitely given over to being "better" at certain sports, but at the end of the day, it is definitely a matter of the mind!! It's all about habit... kinda scary but if you do something long enough, I think that 9/10 times you will grow to/ convince yourself you like it.

Okay, I've been reading way too many philosophy articles. haha.

Thanks for the shout out! :)

Annie, I actually have completed a half marathon and over 12 different 5K's...but in all of them I walked way more than I ran - but no matter how hard I train, or what program or method I try, I simply can't run. If I get to where I can finally breathe and move my legs simultaneously, that's when my bad knees (from years of soccer) kick in and decide to pop out or swell. It's pitiful. So instead, I will simply be content in being a walker - and who knows, maybe when I'm 60 I'll be the granny in the windsuit speedwalking at the mall :)

You're so funny.

What I've come to realize is it doesn't really matter what you're doing as long as you're doing something. I am so proud of you for finding something you love and setting goals for yourself.

I think so many times people set the bar too high for themselves when they start out and feel like a complete failure when they cant reach it... b/c it wasn't a practical goal... they give up and do nothing.

And you'll be a cute granny walker at the mall. :)
